Care1st Health Plan Earns Accreditation and Deemed Status from NCQA

Monterey Park, CA (February 2012) - Care1st Health Plan has been awarded a three year Commendable Accreditation for its Medi-Cal (Medicaid) and Medicare product lines by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality.  Additionally, Care1st received a “Deemed status” from NCQA as a Medicare HMO.

NCQA Accreditation is a nationally recognized evaluation that purchasers, regulators and consumers can use to assess health plans.  The accreditation process evaluates how well a health plan manages all parts of its delivery system - from physicians and hospitals to other health care providers and administrative services - to continuously improve the quality of health care to its members.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has granted NCQA deeming authority for its Medicare Advantage (MA) program.  Managed Care organizations that meet or exceed NCQA standards for Medicare quality requirements are recognized by CMS as being in compliance with federal regulatory standards; thereby removing the need for redundant oversight processes.

Conducted by a team of physicians and managed care experts, the NCQA Accreditation and Medicare Deeming surveys  involve on- and off-site evaluations of approximately 241 standards and selected Health Effectiveness Data Information Set (HEDIS®) performance measures.  A national oversight committee of physicians analyzes the team's findings and assigns an Accreditation level based on the plan’s performance in five areas: Access and Service, Qualified Providers, Staying Healthy, Getting Better, and Living with Illness.

“We are pleased to have NCQA award Care1st a Commendable Accreditation for both our Medi-Cal and Medicare lines of business. This serves to validate the importance that Care1st, its staff and contracted providers place on continuous quality improvement at all levels of the healthcare delivery system.  A tremendous amount of work goes in to achieving accreditation and I’m extremely proud of our on-going efforts to continually improve the quality of our programs.” said Dr. Jorge Weingarten, Chief Medical Officer at Care1st Health Plan.

NCQA’s Accreditation standards are the most rigorous in the industry and are purposely set high to encourage health plans to continually enhance their quality.   Further, accreditation is based on a voluntary review of how a health plan ensures that its members are receiving high-quality care.
This is the second consecutive time that Care1st has received Commendable ratings for its Medi-Cal and Medicare Advantage Plans.  The first award came in 2008 with the Plan’s first attempt at NCQA Accreditation.
